I received my first camera, a Kodak Hawkeye 620, at age 10. During high school I worked in a local camera store. There, I expanded my knowledge of still cameras, movie cameras and a vast number of films. I entered the U.S. Army in early 1964, and completed my basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. I was then sent to Fort Bliss, TX for my advanced individual training (AIT) where I also received Air Defense Artillery training.

I spent 9 months in Ohio before being sent overseas to Europe (Germany). At first we were in the 7th Army, which was changed later to the 32nd Army Air Defense Command. While there I made the rank of SP5 - E5. The Vietnam War happened while I was deployed in Germany. I was never sent to Vietnam; however, we were referred to as servicing during the Vietnam Era. I served three years active and three years reserve duty, being honorably discharged in 1970.
